Understanding key audience profiles and leveraging neighbouring retail offers to create a holistic destination that marries local audiences and cruise ship passengers.

What we did
We undertook a multi-phased research programme combining quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the behaviours, needs and aspirations of Portside Wharf’s diverse users and non-users. Our approach included onsite audits, surveys with over 650 participants, focus groups and best practice benchmarking. We identified key customer segments, including affluent downsizers and young professionals and uncovered opportunities to improve retail diversity, dining experiences and community engagement. Insights from these findings informed a Future Market Vision and Precinct Positioning Framework, aligning the precinct with Brisbane’s evolving urban lifestyle trends.

What we achieved
The research revealed significant opportunities to elevate Portside Wharf’s market position. Key findings highlighted the need for a more refined retail mix, enhanced activation of the riverfront and better integration with surrounding areas. Our recommendations included introducing on-trend dining options, family-friendly spaces and community-focused programming to attract new audiences and increase dwell times. These strategies positioned Portside Wharf as a charismatic and stylish destination, strengthening its appeal as a lifestyle hub while fostering stronger connections with local residents and visitors.
